2009–2012
Animal Series is LEM Collective’s first project, created by Saara Kaatra, Laura Itkonen and Lotta Veromaa with the support of Iittala Group. The series gives new life to everyday ceramic objects by transforming them into stages for miniature narratives.
Using discontinued Iittala moulds, familiar bowls, cups and plates become small worlds inhabited by rabbits, unicorns, birds, frogs and other animals. Their apparent sweetness and innocence contrast with stories of loneliness, conflict, death and the absurd.
Playful, dark and often humorous, the works leave their narratives deliberately open. What at first appears familiar or endearing can quickly become strange, unsettling or macabre, allowing each viewer to discover their own story within the scene.
